Williams senior advisor Jenson Button calls 2022 ‘a building year’ for the team

Williams senior advisor and former World Champion Jenson Button described the 2022 season as a “building year” for his team.

Williams were the team which Button began his Formula 1 career with back in 2000 and ahead of the 2021 campaign, he returned to the Grove outfit as a senior advisor, agreeing a multi-year deal.

Looking to use his vast experience to aid a Williams push back up the pecking order, 2021 demonstrated a clear improvement, the team going from the heartache of a first season without scoring a point in 2020, to collecting 23 in 2021 to secure P8 in the Constructors’ Championship.

The new regulatory era from 2022 represented an opportunity for Williams to make further progress, but in the early stages of the season that ambition has not been realised.

Williams failed to score points in the first two races, a P13 finish for Alex Albon in Bahrain proving the best result so far, while Nicholas Latifi has looked all out of sorts, crashing heavily twice in Saudi Arabia.

Button made it clear though that 2022 is a year where Williams are looking to use the funding from owners Dorilton Capital to build the foundations for future success.

“This is a building year for Williams,” said Button in an interview with Metro.

“They’ve got the funding now for the future which is great, but it takes time. They understand what they need to do.

“This is definitely a positive year, and new regulations always mix things up, which is good, but it’s going to be a couple more years till they’re going to be super competitive, fighting at the front.

“But at least they’re on the journey, which is the important part.”

On top of stepping up his Williams involvement, Button has been busy with a range of other projects and recently got married.

But the Brit explained that he is enjoying it all and looks forward to the season ahead with Williams, also stating his excitement for Formula 1’s upcoming first staging of the Miami Grand Prix.

“It’s been a busy year, but a great year,” said Button.

“I’ve got some other things I’m doing as well, racing and something later in the year that I can’t tell you at the moment.

“There’s a lot going on, I’ll be doing quite a few races with Williams this year and I think everyone is excited about the Miami GP.

“It’s all fun stuff, I’m at a position in my life where I can be involved with companies that I want to be involved with and stuff that’s fun.”
