Motorists must check their number plates regularly over winter and always clear any cover to avoid a massive penalty. Experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts warn failing to do so could lead to severe punishments.

They said: “It isn’t just your roof or window screen that can land you a hefty fine if it is covered in snow.

“If you do not clear any ice or snow obscuring your front and rear number plate you could receive a fine of up to £1,000 from local authorities.

“The law states that all number plates must be clearly visible.

“If it is obstructed it can affect your car being picked up by speed cameras or police checks.

“So it is important to make sure there is no snow, ice or grit covering them before you set off this Christmas.”

GOV.UK has previously wanted drivers cannot “alter” their number plates under any circumstances.

Drivers could be fined up to £1,000 if a driver travels with incorrectly displayed number plates.

Under some circumstances, drivers are also warned their model could fail its MOT test.

Plates cannot be covered as it is the only way your vehicle is recognisable to police.

Number plates are also used by Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to detect drivers if they break driving rules.

ANPR cameras can also check whether a car has been stolen or has paid its up to date road tax.

Blocking this means the camera cannot conduct the proper checks and runs the risk of making a driver look guilty.
