Seeing mega-expensive cars is the proverbial “norm” at Mecum Auctions’ vehicle sales. Exotic supercars, classic hot rods, and even original or replica race cars cross the block and are sold for big money at each stop on the company’s annual tour.
Truck and Off-Road Group Senior Content Producer KJ Jones recently attended Mecum’s Houston, Texas, show, where he learned that in addition to the bling and performance that draws maximum dollars, there also are vehicles that aren’t of the same high standards. That education aside, trucks appearing at Mecum’s auction were the main focus of KJ’s research, and plenty of excellent rigs were scattered throughout the spacious NRG Center.
Bill Carlton and Tim Donelson’s Texas Metal is one of the more popular shows in MotorTrend’s roster of programs. The show is centered around Ekstensive Metal Fabrication, and the creative (mostly truck) builds the shop executes. As KJ notes in his pre-Houston report, a pair of late-model Fords were among four Ekstensive-built vehicles that were for sale: a wickedly painted, supercharged 2016 F-150, and the headliner, Tim’s radically customized 2017 F-250.
With Mecum Auctions’ Indianapolis event fast approaching—set to broadcast live on MotorTrend+ and MotorTrend TV May 18-21—let’s take one last look at the Houston show, and update you on the final stats for the trucks of the Texas Metal Collection.
Ekstensive Metal Fabrication’s 2016 Ford F-150 wasn’t hammered “sold!” at Mecum Auctions’ Houston event. With $53,000 being the highest bid for the 332-mile supercharged 1/2-ton, it moved on for a deal to hopefully be brokered by agents at Mecum’s “The Bid Goes On” desk.
The blacked-out 2021 Cadillac Escalade (left) was purchased for the princely sum of $123,750. However, a high bid of $80,000 couldn’t get a deal done for Ekstensive’s hijacked, big-wheeled 2018 GMC Yukon Denali.
Time for the Fans
In addition to trying to get trucks auctioned, Bill and Tim managed to strike a good balance between business and making time to meet, take photos with, and sign autographs for Texas Metal fans like Eric Goodie Sr., KJ’s brother.
Given the celebrity element, the auction for this ginormous 2017 F-250—the Texas Metal Collection’s flagship—was really exciting. After a few rounds of back-and-forth bidding, Tim’s custom-built Super Duty sold for $187,000.
