Alexander Simms, Mahindra Racing Formula E driver and keen electric car enthusiast said range concerns in newer models were becoming “non-existent”. Instead, he warned firms needed to develop charging infrastructure to ensure cheaper cars have access to rapid technology.
He said electric models could become practical for almost all reload users if the majority of cars could access fast charging bays.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “I think really the range side of the EV argument is pretty much getting to a stage where it’s non-existent now.
“The current range of the new cars on the market at the moment – around the 300 mile mark – is kind of where it needs to be.
“I don’t anticipate us getting many cars going to 500, 600, 700 mile battery range.
“It is just not that relevant to have that much energy stored in your cars the whole time.”
He added: “I think the really interesting thing is going to be charging technology.
“Getting high-speed chargers for cheaper cars on the market will be pretty interesting.
“When we get onto talking about the higher power rate chargers around England and Europe, 350kW chargers.

“If we can get to a state where the majority of cars on the market can accept that charging rate then lots of cars on the market are going to become very practical for all sorts of cases.
“Accessing faster charging while prices are driven down as battery prices get more competitive is the reality of what’s going to happen.”
