David Kaiser, spokesperson for Liqui Moly said an additive would offer “very, very good” protection against metal parts and aluminium if drivers top-up with the new petrol. He said additives use “special molecules” which “stick to the surface of the metal” to offer protection to key parts.
His comments come after various warnings about the possible corrosive properties of the new fuel.
Experts at Hagerty Insurance said Department for Transport tests identified a range of issues concerning damage with the new petrol.
This included degradation to fuel hoses, blocked fuel filters and corroded carburettors.
Mr Kaiser said: “For example, if you drink your tea or your coffee with milk and sugar, the milk and sugar is an additive.
“It is a specially designed product to improve, to adjust the properties of the base.
“In the case of E10, you add an additive to improve defined properties that might be not perfect for your needs.”
He added: “An additive cannot change the properties concerning the gaskets, so this topic will always exist
“But for corrosion, an additive can protect in a very very good way.

“The metal parts, aluminium for example or a steel tank.
“It protects the tank, it protects the fuel pump, it protects the injectors and all the engine parts that are in contact with the fuel.
“How does the additive do this? The additive has special molecules inside and they stick to the surface of the metal.
“They form a very thin layer and this layer protects against contact with water.”
