Experts at vehicle management service Caura have warned drivers will be issued £684million in penalties over the first six months of London’s new Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ). The new research shows over half a million cars will be affected by Sadiq Khan’s new updates.

This equates to one in 4.6 cars being non-compliant and therefore expected to pay the daily £12.50 per day fee to use the zone.

Drivers who forget to pay the new fee will be issued a fine of £160 per day.

Caura made their predictions using previous data with 300,000 ULEZ related fines issued in the first six months after the original scheme was launched.

This generated revenue of around £48million with the new ULEZ expansion 18 times larger.

This would mean around 5.4million fines would be issued generating £864million worth of revenue.

However, 19,000 of the 46,000 appeals were successful at the original ULEZ expansion.

Accounting for a similar success rate, Caura puts the figure at just over £680million.

Sai Lakshmi, CEO and founder of Caura said the changes will have an “impact” on motorists.

He said: “The ULEZ expansion is something that will impact one in 4.6 cars currently on the road in London today.

“That’s huge. We’re here [at Caura] to help motorists cover every part of their car admin.

“With the new ULEZ zone predicted to bring £864 million in charges in the first six months alone, we want to show drivers there’s an easy way to avoid those penalties.”

Caura says drivers can set up their app to automatically pay the ULEZ charge so drivers do not forget the fee.
