One motorist has even claimed they have needed “an extra gallon per week” at the petrol pumps since the new compound was introduced. Meanwhile, others are reporting a drop in their miles per gallon rate by up to ten percent.

Express reader Mike M10 said they had noticed a four miles per gallon drop as a result of the new compound.

They said: “I drive for economy and my 1.4 turbo 4×4 has seen a 10 percent drop in fuel economy 38mpg to 34 mpg (4mpg) since the switch to E10.

“An extra gallon per week is now needed.

“I fail to see how the CO2 savings from E5 > E10 can cancel out burning another gallon per week.

“It’s far more likely that extra gallon = more CO2 per week than before.

“I’ve switched to Super Unleaded as a result and instantly my economy climbed from a low of 34mpg to 40mpg on the same journeys, so I gained 6mpg by switching back to an E5.”

Reader BiRo added: “MPG has dropped 10 percent using the UK mix of E10.

“Strangely, over 10k miles of continental purchase and usage mpg did not vary in comparison with other blends and my car is designed to use E10.”

JacksDad added: “MPG 3 percent down on 2017 mini, and also ‘pulling’ power reduced resulting in gear change down that was not needed before.”

BobPage added: “People were told that E10 was good for the environment, but they misunderstood.

“They thought they meant it would reduce emissions.“What was actually meant was that it would increase the running costs of owning a car, thus forcing drivers off the road.”

However, not all motorists said they experienced issues with E10 since its launch.
