Members of Parliament who drive into London have reportedly avoided paying thousands of pounds worth of car taxes. This includes congestion charges and ultra low emission zone (ULEZ) fees.

The data came as part of an investigation carried out by The Independent.

Congestion charges and ULEZ fees target those who drive through parts of central London.

Vehicles who do not meet the ULEZ emissions standards must pay a daily charge, which is £12.50 for most vehicles.

The charge applies to anyone who does not meet the requirements and drivers can be charged 24 hours a day, every day of the year apart from Christmas.

However, the new data suggests MPs expensed £70,000 worth of congestion and ULEZ charges in the last full financial year.

This means they have avoided personally paying for the anti-pollution charges.

Clear air groups have now written to Parliament’s expense watchdog to ask for this to stop.

It was also suggested many politicians who made the claims drove more polluting cars, which meant they faced the higher ULEZ fee of £27.50 a day.

MPs are able to expense the bills under parliamentary expense rules, however the chair of London’s health committee commented this “defeats the point of having these deterring measures in place”.

A total of 116 MPs were found by the investigation to have expensed £15 congestion charges or ULEZ fees at least once since the current financial year began.

It was not clear in all cases which car tax was being expensed.

The current rules mean all of the expenses were legitimate.
