Coronavirus and Car Buying: Volkswagen’s Sign Anywhere Tool Reduces Dealership Contact

With safety on everyone’s mind because of the COVID-19 pandemic, dealers are finding ways to make the car-buying and leasing experience as low-risk as possible. To that end, Volkswagen has developed a new tool that enables car buyers to finish their dealership paperwork from anywhere.

With the Sign Anywhere program, customers can remotely and securely access and digitally sign financial documents from their home computer or mobile device instead of going to a dealership and doing it in person. This reduces the number of people and places shoppers are in contact with.

Volkswagen said that the program is among the first of its kind in the U.S. auto industry — and it’s been a long time coming. VW has been planning a tool like this for two years, but said the pandemic fast-tracked its debut.

The new service isn’t available everywhere, however. Some state laws require in-person signatures on financial documents at dealerships. VW said Sign Anywhere is available at more than 400 Volkswagen dealerships in the U.S.; the automaker has more than 600 dealerships in the U.S.
