E10 biofuel: Department for Transport explains why it’s ‘better'

Jonathan Barbara, Managing Director at Parkers MOT said older vehicles will “suffer a whole lot more” than newer vehicles. He warns the corrosion of older vehicles is one of the “biggest problems” E10 will cause.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “So far so good but it’s early days.
“The older cars are going to suffer a whole lot more than newer ones.
“Anything with metal fuel pipes or tanks are going to suffer greatly because of the amount of water ethanol absorbs.
“That is the biggest problem, that is the biggest cause of it.”
He added: “The corrosion is bad enough as it is in the winter months,
“But with ethanol, it just accelerates it.”
Experts at classic car insurance group Hagerty have also warned about the risks of using the new E10 fuel.
They said many cars run on E5 without significant issues but doubling the amount of ethanol can cause “a variety of issues”.

They warn ethanol is hygroscopic meaning it absorbs water from the atmosphere.
This then finds its way into your car and can cause a range of damage to key parts.
Tests from the Department for Transport (DfT) found the new fiel may lead to degradation of fuel seals and blocked filters.
They also identified blocked fuel filters, damaged pumps and corroded carburettors.
