2023 Mazda CX-90 SUV Teases New Inline-Six Engine

Last October, Mazda made the big announcement that it was developing an all-new inline six-cylinder engine, possibly for a new Mazda 6 sedan but certainly bound for the brand’s expanding lineup of SUVs. While the prospect of a Mazda 6 is getting dimmer and dimmer, we’re still about to see the fruits of Mazda’s labor, apparently, as the Japanese automaker has teased an all-new model: the 2023 Mazda CX-90 SUV featuring the new straight-six powerplant.

So far, there’s not a ton of information, but the single teaser image does provide a few revelations about the upcoming brand new model for Mazda. The side badging obviously reveals the inline-six engine has made it out of development and is bound for the U.S. market in American-made Mazda SUVs, as promised. Mazda previously announced all future models will be equipped with either an inline-six gas or plug-in hybrid powertrain, but there’s no hint of a hybrid version of this new CX-90 so far.

Mazda also confirmed in a news release that the CX-90 will introduce a new paint color shown in the teaser image called Artisan Red, and it will be a three-row SUV. To fit all those seats, it’ll be built on an all-new large vehicle platform, and is meant to be the brand’s next flagship model. The CX-90 will be “wider, longer, and more aggressive” in proportion compared to every current Mazda model. In the future, the new platform is expected to also underpin an upcoming new CX-70 SUV, as well.

The exterior look is a continuation of Mazda’s Kodo design language that plays with smooth, curvy surfaces and “harnesses the power of light and shadow.” Evidently, the new Artisan Red color is “specifically developed to suit large platform vehicles.” We’ll learn more about the 2023 Mazda CX-90 SUV at its official reveal coming up in January 2023.
