Although we won’t get to see it until late next month, Volkswagen has announced that production on the ID.4 is beginning now. Production started in Zwickau, where the ID.3 is also produced.
“The ID.4 is not only the first fully-electric SUV from the Volkswagen brand,” says Brand Director Thomas Ulbrich. “It will also be a genuine world car, which we will produce and sell not only in Europe, but also in China and the USA.”
Although production will only occur in Germany for the time being, plans are to expand production to the US as soon as Chattnooga’s electric line is ready in 2022. Production will also start in China before the end of the year.
The ID.4, like the ID.3, will use VW’s MEB platform. Since it’s bigger, though, it should be able to go farther on a charge. And thanks to the battery pack in the floor of the car, the center of gravity should remain quite low, which will be good for driving dynamics.
As the first of Volkswagen’s ID cars that will be sold in America, the ID.4 will have a lot of weight on its shoulders. Not only will it carry VW’s electric ambitions, but in many ways will be expected to continue the growth started by the Tiguan and the Atlas.
“With the ID.4, Volkswagen is expanding its range to include a fully-electric vehicle in the world’s largest growth segment, the compact SUV class,” said CEO Ralf Brandstätter
