First Edition BMW X5 and X6 M revealed

Limited-run versions of 625hp Competition models get bespoke features and extra equipment

The latest BMW X5 and X6 M Competition don’t exactly lack power or presence, what with a 625hp twin-turbocharged V8 and plenty of kit. But the manufacturer knows only too well the value of a high-price, low-volume model, hence the launch of the First Edition, which will be limited to 250 units per variant.

Both M-branded SUVs – which are both capable of sub four-second 0-62mph times – get their own M light-alloy wheel design with Jet Black paint, in 21- and 22-inch diameters front and rear. The cars also add carbon fibre reinforced plastic bits; it’s on the mirror caps, rear spoiler and engine cover. Purely for the aesthetic charm, of course – both exceed two tonnes.

Also new for the pair is a Frozen Dark Silver paint shade, shown here on the X6. Alternatively, buyers can opt for the Frozen Marina Bay Blue colour, which is said to be popular across its performance SUV range because, well, it’s rather lovely. The X5 certainly wears it well against all that CFRP trim and black rims. The rest of the X5 and X6 exteriors are as before, which is to say butch, and clearly targeting buyers of different tastes and use cases.

Inside, there’s Merino leather trim in a First Edition-exclusive Silverstone and Midnight Blue colour combo, set against black Alcantara inserts in the seats and contrasting stitching with a Sakhir Orange thread.  The headliner is also Alcantara and Midnight Blue in shade, while the rest of the cabin is top-grade X6/X5, as you’d expect in cars set to cost more than the £110k starting price of the series run Competitions. Naturally, each of the 250 special editions gets a “First Edition 1/250” plaque inside, too. Don’t expect to see many in this guise, although the UK is likely to receive more than its fair share after the recent X7 Shadow Edition proved popular with buyers.
